A big thank you to all the artists for supporting the Camberwell Art Show

This year’s show our 53rd, has been another resounding success due to the quality of the paintings presented by the artists and the commitment of the volunteers who organised it, the largest of its type in Australia.

Logistically, it is a massive task to co-ordinate such a large cultural event with the committee spending 12 months preparing each show.

In 2018, 675 artists presented 2,500 works to the selection panel. After 2 days of deliberation 1335 paintings were successfully selected for display at the show. The next step in putting on this show was the allocation of a stand for each painting based on the image sent to by each artist. As the person responsible for this allocation may I suggest to artists who may enter future shows, that they upload a hi-res image for 2 reasons:

1. A poor quality image may not be viewed favourably by the selection panel.

2. A hi-res image will make it easier to allocate the work to a stand.

Set up commenced on Monday 2nd July in the excellent contemporary space in the Advanced Technology Centre at Swinburne University. The artists delivered the paintings on Tuesday and on Wednesday the 1335 paintings were hung by 32 volunteers who had been trained how to hang paintings to enhance the potential sale for each painting. On Thursday the 3 judges, Julian Bruere, Denise Keele-Bedford and Helen Grant spent all day assessing each painting before deliberating and choosing the prize winners.

Friday 6th July was Gala Opening Night when 400 attendees heard the announcement of the winners and viewed the paintings positively resulting in 122 painting sales on the first night.  A great endorsement of the quality of the displayed paintings.

Ten days later on Sunday 15th July purchasers and artists collected the sold and unsold paintings and by the end of Monday 16th July the Camberwell Art Show was over for another year with the outstanding result of $130,000 being raised for worthy local, regional and international projects.

On behalf of the Camberwell Art Show committee I would like to thank all the artists who supported the show by presenting such high quality work for exhibition and to those artists who were not successful in being selected this year, don’t be discouraged and remember that '.. my best painting is my next painting….'
