2018 Judges

Julian BruereThe Camberwell Art Show committee is pleased to announced that it has gained the services of the respected artist and judge, Julian Bruere to be the Chief Judge of the 2018 show.

Painting, Teaching, Workshops, Demonstrations, Judging and an active involvement with the Victorian Artists Society and other Art Societies is his professional domain after many years in Advertising, Publishing and Animation.

He is a regular exhibitor in exhibitions around Melbourne, and for the past eight years has been involved with FIVE, an annual group exhibition of select VAS artists. He has twice been awarded The Traditional Maritime Prize at the ANL Maritime Exhibition, 2008 and 2016, VAS Artist of the Year, 2010 and 2013, The Kenneth Jack Memorial Award 2010 and 2014 and the AGRA Medallion Winner, 2013 and 2015. Julian has previous judging experience with The Victor Harbour Art Exhibition, Yea, Warrandyte, San Remo, Bacchus Marsh, AGRA, Kenneth Jack Drawing Exhibition, and recently Sherbrooke Art Society. He is the Victorian Vice President of the Australian Society of Marine Artists and a past Treasurer of the Victorian Artists' Society. He is also a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute, Australian Guild of Realist Artists and Watercolour Society Victoria and is a past member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society.


Julian will be ably assisted by the internationally well regarded contemporary artist, Denise Keele-Bedford. Denise is an Australian artist who creates her artwork based at Stony Creek Studio in Warrandyte Australia and at Huanghua Studio in Beijing China. In 2013 Denise celebrated 10 Years of Making Art in China with a Solo Exhibition titled Bloom of Youth, and a publication Ten Years in China. Denise participates in many local, national and international exhibitions and undertakes many workshop programs. She is the recipient of several Residency Awards including Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon AIR and several commissions including Tianjin Port Authority 60th Anniversary, BHG and Cocoa Cola Art Project, Western Academy of Beijing, Willoughby Visual Art Biennial, 27 Degree East Lake Ecological Sculpture Biennial. Denise completed a Master of Arts at RMIT, Melbourne in 2002.

Her art practice is based on cultural diversity, belief systems, rituals, and icons that form the celebrations of these. She uses a variety of media to enhance & harmonize with the conceptual expressions encompassing places of worship, sacred sites, spirituality and related symbols. Denise is Patron for Tasun Creative Art in China, Secretary for the Artists 2000 Foundation, Art Consultant for Dongdong and Lulu AIR Program, Consultant for YARC Beijing/Gwangju, and an independent curator.


Australian Artist magazine editor Helen Grant, will be joining Julian and Denise in judging Camberwell Art Show 2018. A qualified lawyer and veteran of the media industry, Helen has been dedicated to editing and producing the 84-page monthly editions of Australian Artist, a responsibility she has held since 2006. Australian Artist is a highly respected art education magazine featuring predominantly established industry professionals, as well as fostering a healthy number of now significant Australian artists, including many artists well known to Camberwell Art Show patrons. These artists include David Taylor, Joseph Zbukvic, Amanda Hyatt and many more. Helen said she couples her magazine work with competition judging throughout NSW and Queensland and has found her forte in close constructive criticism with an eye for unique and honed technique.
