Ruth Dodd

  • Biography

I studied art and interior design at East Sydney Art School under some notable teachers. Phyllis Shillito: colour & design; Herbert Badham: perspective and Thomas Gleghorn and Roy Fluke: painting.
I practiced as an interior designer with the NSW Government before moving into the field of cartography at the Division of National Mapping, Canberra, now Geoscience Australia.

I worked with, and then headed a team that worked on the design and presentation of maps and atlases. I was awarded the Public Service Medal in the 2002 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for my ‘contribution to major national mapping and atlas programs’.

I use my mapping and design skills to produce paintings which include urban and rural landscapes, still life and some portraiture. My genre is representational art and I work from close observation and use colour to dramatise what I see to be the essential elements.

Works are sold mainly through regional art galleries and wineries. I have received 34 commissions and have made corporate sales to Barton Estate Wines, Schmidt Quarries, AGL Energy Ltd and the Gumnut Dance Studio.
