Ray Hewitt is a tonalist oil painter. Born and raised in Newport, just streets from where he still lives, his father Bill’s interest in art and ability to draw inspired him to take up painting.
Hewitt enjoys painting landscapes and has travelled to France, Cornwall, in the UK, and Tasmania to paint.
He is an experienced and popular teacher of traditional oil painting at the Victorian Artists Society. He joined the Twenty Melbourne Painters Society in 2016.
He has been awarded the Victorian Artists Society’s Artist of the Year award three times, most recently in 2014. This is not awarded by a committee or judge, but by artist peers within the Society, and demands sustained quality artistic output throughout the year.
