ince graduating from a Fine Arts Degree at RMIT in 1992, Penelope Long has been painting and exhibiting regularly. A prolific painter, Penelope has had over twenty solo exhibitions at commercial galleries in Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong. She has also been a finalist in numerous art prizes including the Salon de Refuses and the prestigious Portia Geach Memorial Award. Penelope has paintings in public and private collections and has painted many portrait commissions including two images of the Virgin Mary.
A lover of mark making and texture, Penelope enjoys the gooey viscosity and pliable nature of oil paint. She employs the wet-on-wet technique of painting favoured by the Impressionists which gives her works a greater fluency and freshness.
Penelope's paintings are inspired by the powerful tonality of Renaissance portraiture, the immediacy of contemporary abstract painting and the vibrant colours of French Impressionism.
