Karen Payne

  • Biography

Originally from Melbourne, Karen has been living between her home town and the Sunshine Coast for the last few years.

It was on the Coast that she became involved with Life Drawing groups and soon became passionate and obsessed with portraying the female form.

Believing that often the 'perfect' body is not necessarily the most beautiful, Karen is inspired by the woman who is openly comfortable in her own skin regardless of shape or size, challenging our concept of beauty.

Her work is an exploration into the anatomy of human form and emotion. Sometimes part of that form is obscured, deformed or undefined, allowing the viewer to explore and interpret personal meaning.

She sees art as a reflection of life, of experiences and relationships, of the conscious and the subconscious. Karen often portrays figures without faces so as not to impose upon the viewer, allowing them to interpret the mood and meaning.

She loves soft pastel for its malleability and ability to reflect light both enveloping and exposing form. Pastel is the perfect medium.
