  • Biography

Debra J. Marshall is a visual artist living and working on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung country in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.

My art practice is grounded within the investigation and exploration of landscape.  As an ex-dancer, for me, the drawn line reflects bodily movement through an environment. I usually work in site-responsive ways, so my methodology is a mixture of on-site sketching and reference photography taken back to the studio for further investigation. The line of the pencil helps me progressively discover the tapestry of the landscape, and how I am situated within it.

My preferred mediums are ink, graphite, pigment pens and coloured pencils. With these delicate mediums, a simple line can indicate form, and crosshatching can reveal tone, light and shade.

When COVID stopped movement beyond the front door, I made the empty page my landscape. In this piece, I drew from the bottom of the page up, tracing an imaginary journey, constantly surprised by what appeared next. I followed the river upstream, turned a corner, and a new vista was revealed.
